The History Society meets at the Village Hall in the Wellow Room on the third Wednesday of every month at 7.30PM. Topics covered include the history (ancient and modern) and matters of interest in the village and local area.
We also collect and preserve old documents, some dating from the 17th century, and old photographs. We have also recorded interesting memories on tape, including one of the voice of Florence Nightingale. We have a photographic record of Wellow and a video film of village activities for 1999/2000, which gives a picture of life in Wellow at the turn of the Millennium.
We always welcome new members. Membership of the Society also includes the entitlement to attend LTVAS (Lower Test Valley Archaeological Society) meetings in Romsey as well as ours in Wellow. Visitors are welcome on payment of £1.50, refundable if they decide to join!
Our programme for the autumn has a flavour of the Americas. The first meeting of the autumn programme took place on September 18th when Joan Marder entertained us with a wonderful insight into the first National Park: Yellowstone USA.
The Americas theme continues at our October 16th meeting when Michael Sleigh will take us to Mexico to look at the history of its Palaces, People and Pyramids. The 20th November brings our AGM which will be followed by an account of the BBC's coverage of the Falklands War by Paul Gouldstone. Paul's memories are always fascinating.
December 11th is the date for our Christmas Party, when we we all enjoy good company, good food and 'home grown' entertainment. New members and visitors are always very welcome at our meetings. As well as our monthly meetings there is always a lot of behind the scenes work going on in the Society. This includes research into the history of Wellow, writing and publishing books on the history of the village and close liaison with other History Societies in the Test Valley area.
